David Mauroff

Chief Executive Officer, San Francisco Pretrial Diversion Project

David Mauroff (he/him) is the Chief Executive Officer of the San Francisco Pretrial Diversion Project (SF Pretrial). Since 1976, SF Pretrial has been a pioneer in providing community-based pretrial services as an alternative to traditional prosecution, sentencing, and detention. Grounded on the premise that all people are presumed innocent until proven guilty, SF Pretrial helps system-impacted people effectively navigate court processes and avoid re-arrest while awaiting trial. Through non-judgmental, relationship-centered, and culturally relevant approaches, SF Pretrial nurtures pathways for system-impacted people to achieve healing, stability, and freedom. Operating 365 days a year and 24 hours a day, the organization offers a full spectrum of services ranging from behavioral health support groups to pretrial diversion and release programming. In 2022 alone, the organization served 4,613 new clients and 2,132 successfully completed their SF Pretrial program. These services resulted in clients avoiding 611,648 days of unnecessary jail confinement.

David became the CEO of SF Pretrial in 2018 and has been working to improve equity and opportunity through the nonprofit, criminal justice, and community development fields for nearly 30 years. Previously, he developed two award-winning social enterprises—Sunrise Sidewalk Cleaners and Green Streets—to empower marginalized youth and adults in crime-impacted neighborhoods. David has worked to advance affordable housing and served in the San Francisco Mayor’s Office of Criminal Justice. Through his extensive work with gangs, he was involved with the Boys & Girls Club of America National Gang Advisory Committee. He is currently on the Board of the National Criminal Justice Association and National Association of Pretrial Services Agencies.

After three decades working in and supporting San Francisco’s most marginalized and disenfranchised communities, David’s sabbatical will give him the space to invest in himself and his family. As David states, “I love this work and want to use this time to deeply explore how I keep going for another ten years in a meaningful way, not in a way where I’m trying to dodge burnout.”
